MERVYN PEAKE
11 Original Drawings from More Prayers and Graces by Allan M. Laing.
1957. MERVYN PEAKE Original Drawings for More Prayers and Graces> a second little book of unusual piety. 1957 In 1944 Mervyn Peake had been asked to illustrate Prayers and Graces, compiled by Allan M. Laing, a collection of witty aphorisms loosely connected with morality and piety. It was the Christmas book of the year selling at least 40,000 copies. The publisher, Gollancz, revisited the idea in 1957 with similar success. The drawings used for the actual publications were presumably in the Gollancz archives and appear to now be lost. However, Peake was obviously taken with some of the subjects and produced more sophisticated versions of the drawings in pen and ink, most with added watercolour. I can offer 11 of these drawings, all that are currently known. All are in high quality acid-free mounts and in attractive frames. Each picture is illustrated from photographs taken prior to framing. The sizes given are approximate and refer to the pictures only> the mounts and frames add another 230 mm. or so to each dimension. The collection will be supplied post free within the U.K. but an overseas buyer will have to cover the cost of packing and shipping. The collection is sold as a whole and no pictures will be sold individually. 11 pictures. Comprising: 1. "A Bulletin for God." 125 x 195 mm. 2. "Ecstasy of a Bishop." 190 x 165 mm. 3. "When the worm turns." 275 x 220 mm. 4. "A Child's Prayer." 180 x 120 mm. 5. "A Sporting Offer." 185 x 145 mm. 6. "Spoonerian Wisdom." 155 x 110 mm. 7. "Not Heaven's Target." 170 x 120 mm. 8. "A Comminatory Exercise." 160 x 125 mm. 9. "A Puzzle for Omnipotence." 225 x 170 mm. 10. "The Lord is Misinformed." 160 x 125 mm. 11. "Prayer of a Poor Pedestrian." 210 x 150 mm. The main image supplied is a composite image and I have added a few more, all that can be shown on abebooks. A pdf with all the images in better quality can be supplied on request.

MERVYN PEAKE
Artist at His Easel. Original pen and ink drawing.
1936 - 38. Unsigned. Pen and ink, 290 x 220 mm. [unframed size] a couple of vertical creases, drawn on the back of a book illustration. Framed and glazed. Original Drawing from the Studio Sale of Raymond Henry Bradshaw [1918 - 97]. May have the Bradshaw studio stamp. Bradshaw trained at the Westminster School of Art from 1936 to 1938 under the tutorship of Mark Gertler (1891-1939), Bernard Meninsky (1891-1950), Mervyn Peake (1911-1968), and Adrian Hill (1885-1977) and his relationship with these artists remained close. After serving in the RAF during the war, he taught and was Head of the Art Department at Bancroft's School, where he himself had been educated (1928-35). This drawing probably come from his time as a student of Peake's at Westminster School. It was Peake's habit to give away drawings which he produced as demonstrations in the life class, usually nudes, and normally much less finished than seen here.
